Conservation and Restoration

Conservation and restauration: honoring the seaplane aviation’s history

After the Latécoère assembly and flight test base’s installation in 1930 then that of the Hourtiquets base in the late thirties, Biscarrosse, being a real gate on the Atlantic, was the perfect place for the creation of a unique Seaplane Museum in Europe.

Safeguarding a unique heritage

The Museum’s team has set itself the task of tracing the history of seaplanes from the entire world, starting from the precursors on their strange machines to the most recent and modern ones.

For that reason, various and numerous documents have been collected  :

  • old maps,
  • autographs,
  • original editions,
  • flight uniforms,
  • decorations,
  • flight books,
  • personal souvenirs of famous pilots,
  • spare parts,
  • original paintings,
  • reproductions,
  • posters,
  • advertising documents of that time
  • ...

This historical presentation occupies buildings of 1250 m2 and some of them were used to house the workers of the Hourtiquets base.

"Full-size" seaplanes are extremely rare nowadays. Time and marine corrosion have done them damage. Apart from a few devices restored by enthusiasts, the seaplanes that were rescued are currently in museums.

And why not in ours? In the large 480m2 hall, seaplanes from 1912 to the eighties, restored or being restored, are exhibited.

The Museum’s team is committed to preserve this heritage and to the construction techniques inherent in this domain.
